To read a book or a play invites us to step into a new world, to meet a different cast of characters, to join someone else’s adventure, and to experience places and times that may be unrecognisable from our own. Equally, literature can give us the opportunity to interact with ideas and experiences that we may have in common with the author, but in someone else's voice. As George R. R. Martin, the author of Game of Thrones writes: “A reader lives a thousand times… The person who never reads lives only once.” In this course you'll encounter a range of texts and explore how literature has evolved over time.
