Choosing the right year group for your child can feel confusing — especially if you are new to the British education system or coming from a different school structure. At Minerva Virtual Academy (MVA), we aim to make this decision simple and stress-free.
Understanding Year Groups at MVA
MVA follows the British education system, where year groups are based on a child’s age on 31 August before the September start of the academic year. For example, if your child turns 12 in October, they will usually join Year 7 (ages 11–12).

Not Sure Which Year Group is Right?
It’s common for families — especially those coming from international school systems — to be unsure about the right placement. For example:
- A 13-year-old in US Grade 8 would usually enter Year 9 at MVA.
- A 15-year-old would typically be in Year 11, preparing for their GCSE exams.
If your child has been homeschooled, skipped grades, or needs extra support, we can be flexible. Our admissions team will guide you based on your child’s date of birth, previous schooling, and academic level.
Key Stages Explained
- Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9): A broad and balanced curriculum designed to build knowledge and skills across a range of subjects.
- Key Stage 4 (Years 10–11): Students focus on their GCSE courses, selecting subjects alongside core requirements such as English, Maths, and Science.
- Key Stage 5 (Years 12–13): Students specialise in A Level subjects, which prepare them for university or further study.
