Minerva Virtual Academy (MVA) is your DfE-accredited online school partner.

We work with Local Authorities and schools across the UK to deliver high-quality, flexible provision for students who need a different path. We take care of all the admin, safeguarding, and compliance along the way.

Our provision is high-impact but low-pressure, designed to re-engage students who are struggling with mainstream education due to SEND, mental health, attendance issues, or personal challenges.

Why schools trust MVA
A note from Suzanne Lindley, Principal

“We know how hard it can be when a student doesn’t quite fit the shape of traditional schooling. That’s why we work closely with school heads and leaders to offer a flexible and trusted alternative, one that puts wellbeing first, takes pressure off internal teams and meets DfE-accredited standards for online learning.

Our main priority is to remove barriers to education for the students who need it most. I’m so proud of our school and what we can achieve for students who are thriving under a different approach.

We hope to speak with you soon and build a lasting relationship that truly benefits every student involved.

— Suzanne Lindley

Principal

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can MVA be named in Section I of an EHCP?

Currently, MVA cannot be named in Section I of an EHCP as we are not listed in Section 38(3) of the Children and Families Act 2014. However, we are an alternative provision commissioned by the named school or authority, funded through agreed EHCP budgets. This ensures compliance, safeguarding, and continuity of support.

Do you have examples of LA-funded success stories?

Yes. For example:

  • A student with severe anxiety joined through LA funding, re-engaged with learning, and even participated in school trips before successfully transitioning back to mainstream education.
  • Another student out of education for months due to unmet needs joined MVA and is now fully engaging with lessons, thriving in the supportive online environment.

Funding Pathways

We work with local authorities and schools to ensure funding routes are clear and straightforward.

If a student has an EHCP

  • Via Local Authority (EOTAS): Parents request MVA, LA sends a formal consult, and funding is approved if needs can be met.
  • Via Current School (Dual Enrolment): Schools fund MVA as an alternative provider with written approval.

If there is no EHCP

  • Via Local Authority: Section 19 of the Education Act may allow funding for children unable to attend due to illness, SEND, or EBSNA.

Via Current School: Schools can fund MVA directly as an alternative provider.

Who we support?

MVA is a proven solution for:

  • Students with EHCPs or those undergoing assessment.
  • Young people experiencing EBSA / school refusal.
  • Neurodivergent students who need a calmer, flexible environment.
  • Students awaiting placement or reintegration (short-term online provision).
  • Gifted, dual-career students (athletes, performers, carers) who need flexibility.

We currently partner with 100+ schools and Local Authorities nationwide, from inner-city academies to independent schools, offering placements that are robust, flexible, and cost-effective.

Case Studies

Case Study: Beren Y – Enfield LA

"Beren had withdrawn from her mainstream school due to severe anxiety and was no longer attending. Her parent and Enfield LA sought a supportive setting that could rebuild her confidence.

We worked with Enfield LA to secure panel funding, and Beren joined MVA. Within weeks, she re-engaged with learning, even participating in a school trip which restored her confidence in social interaction.

Over time, her emotional regulation improved, and in May 2025 she successfully transitioned back into in-person schooling.

“She finished with us last week and was starting at a new in-person school as of Monday. She really missed the social aspects of face-to-face schooling.”
Susan Murray, Mentor

Case Study: Zayn K – Tower Hamlets LA

"Zayn was struggling to cope in mainstream education, and his needs were not being met. His family and school worked with Tower Hamlets LA to explore alternatives, and we confirmed that MVA could support him effectively.

Following approval at LA panel, Zayn joined MVA. He has since settled quickly, engaging in all of his lessons and showing real enthusiasm for learning.

“Doing really well, he’s engaging in all of his lessons and learning and has settled in great.”
Rachel Tryner, Mentor

All placements are Ofsted-registered and DfE-accredited, giving local authorities assurance that students are safe, supported, and learning in a high-quality environment.
