Trailblazers: Minerva Students Take On The First Ever MVA DofE Bronze Expedition
What happens when a group of Year 9 online classmates step away from their screens and swap their keyboards for compasses, heavy rucksacks, and hiking boots?
During the final week of term, 16 unstoppable Year 9 students gathered in the picturesque Peak District to tackle The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Bronze Expedition. These students made history by being the first ever students from an online school to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh expedition. It serves as a powerful reminder of the deep friendships, teamwork, and independence our students build together.
Day 1: Finding Our Footing
The adventure kicked off at Matlock Bath train station. Day one served as a practice expedition to hone essential outdoor skills before heading toward the campsite.
Students spent several hours navigating winding woodland paths, crossing rolling fields, and tackling steep hill climbs. Along the way, they navigated through pastures alongside local wildlife and farmyard animals, from curious sheep to horses and cows.
Once camp was reached, the teamwork didn’t stop. After pitching tents and setting up camp, the evening quickly turned into a hive of activity, featuring competitive games of volleyball and football into the sunset.
Day 2: Navigating the Elements
The second day brought the ultimate test of endurance, navigation, and perseverance. Journeying from village to village, the teams faced a combination of blazing sunshine, heavy rucksacks, and footpaths that didn't always match the map.
Armed with their Trangia stoves, map-reading skills, and a healthy dose of determination, the group pushed through heat and hayfever alike. The reward? A well-earned ice lolly upon returning to camp, followed by another hearty meal of camping stove pasta.
Day 3: Ancient Landmarks and the Final Stretch
The final leg of the journey took the group through ancient stone circles and dense forests of stinging nettles, proving that perseverance truly is an MVA superpower.
The expedition culminated in Bakewell, where students crossed the finish line to a warm welcome from waiting parents and staff.
Over three intense days, the group transformed into seasoned navigators, master tent-pitchers, and an extraordinarily tight-knit team.
