Parenting A Young Athlete: Resilience and the Stability Zone

Change, uncertainty, injury, selection pressure, transitions between teams or levels... these moments can unsettle even the most committed young athletes. This session explores how athletes can develop Stability Zones: personal anchors that support resilience, confidence, and emotional regulation when life or sport moves them beyond what feels safe.
Led by Paralympian Talan Skeels-Piggins, this live webinar and Q&A introduces parents to the Stability Zone concept — first articulated by futurist Alvin Toffler — and shows how it can be applied practically to young athletes navigating challenge, growth, and change.
Periods of change often pull athletes away from what feels familiar or secure. Without the right support, this can lead to anxiety, loss of confidence, or burnout.
In this session, Talan will share insights drawn from elite sport and lived experience, helping parents understand how Stability Zones act as psychological buffers — offering safety, grounding, and consistency during times of uncertainty.
You’ll explore how young athletes can intentionally build and protect these zones, and how parents can support them without limiting growth or independence.
You’ll learn about:
🧠 What Stability Zones are — and why they matter for resilience
🛡️ How Stability Zones protect athletes during periods of change
🤝 The role of people, places, and routines in emotional regulation
🎧 How music, objects, and ideas can anchor calm and confidence
⚖️ Supporting growth without removing an athlete’s sense of safety
As a parent of a young athlete, you play one of the most influential roles in their journey - but it isn’t always easy to know how much to push, when to step back, or how to help them manage the emotional highs and lows of competitive sport. This session, hosted by MVA for Athletes, is designed to give you the tools, perspective, and confidence to support your child not just as an athlete, but as a growing individual. You’ll leave with a deeper understanding of how to nurture their well-being, motivation, and love for their sport, while maintaining a healthy balance that benefits the whole family.
